Stephen concentrates his practice in the re/insurance sector of international trade. Clients include leading domestic and multinational stock, mutual and captive entities, intermediaries, trade organizations, regulators, and receivers. Stephen's experience includes the resolution of complex disputes through transactions, legislative and regulatory action, negotiation, mediation, arbitration and court litigation in and outside the US, from trial through appeal. Most recently, Stephen favorably settled IP claims involving an Asian internet marketplace, obtained dismissal with prejudice of a class action involving eyewear, co-led 50+ reinsurance counterparties in resolving set-off disputes in the DE rehabilitation of Scottish Re, represented Premia in its acquisition of the direct (and affiliate related) business of Public Service Ins. Co., in Rehabilitation (IL), and led the representation of the PA Ins. Cmsr. as receiver of long term care carrier Penn Treaty, He currently represents a cedent in a facultative reinsurance dispute, and the purchaser of a life insurer through a rehabilitation. Stephen has published numerous cited book chapters and articles, and chaired/presented at many conferences and seminars. His current scholarship is focused on legacy re/insurance transactions, particularly through court supervised receivership and statutory business division and transfer. His professional association memberships reflect his practice (e.g., IBA, ABA, IAIR, FORC). Stephen's civic/charitable service focuses on diversity, equity & inclusion and youth development, including board membership in Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, Pathway to Adventure Council (Boy Scouts of Am.), Museum of the Am. Revolution (Phila.), Chicago Committee on Minorities in Large Law Firms, Penn State Law School Development Council, and Powered by Action. He is a member of The Chicago Club.
